Directions
Directions
  • Weigh your dog and select the pack that closely matches your dog's weight.
  • This chew should be administered orally once every month, on or about the same day of each month.
  • HeartGard Plus can be given directly by hand, encouraging the dog to chew the treatment rather than swallowing it whole.
  • If your dog swallows treats whole, this chew may be broken into pieces.
  • This heartworm preventive may be added to a small amount of dog food. However, you must ensure the dog takes the complete dose. If a part of the dose is missed, give another dose.
  • To prevent heartworm disease, give the treatment monthly when mosquitoes are active. Administer the first dose after your dog's first seasonal exposure to mosquitoes and the final dose within one month of the last exposure to mosquitoes.
  • If you are switching from another heartworm preventive, administer the first dose of HeartGard Plus within one month of the last dose of the previous heartworm preventive.
  • If you miss or forget a dose, administer one dose immediately and continue with the monthly dosing schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions

What is HeartGard Plus?

HeartGard Plus is a tasty, real beef chew that is designed to protect your dog from heartworm disease and intestinal worms for one month.

What parasites does this monthly chewable protect my dog against?

When used as indicated, this oral formula helps prevent heartworm disease and treats and controls two species of roundworms and three species of hookworms.

How does this dog heartworm preventive work?

HeartGard Plus contains active ingredients, ivermectin and pyrantel. After administration, the formula is quickly absorbed into the dog's bloodstream. Ivermectin works against the tissue stage of heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis), allowing the dog's immune system to identify and inactivate these larvae before they grow into adult heartworms. Pyrantel effectively treats and controls roundworms and hookworms.

Is HeartGard Plus safe for my dog?

When used according to the label instructions, HeartGard Plus has shown a wide margin of safety as the recommended dose level in puppies and dogs aged 6 weeks or older, as well as pregnant, breeding and stud dogs.

How frequently should I administer HeartGard Plus chews to my dog?

This heartworm preventive for dogs should be administered to dogs once every month, throughout the year.

Is there a minimum age or weight requirement to administer this treatment to my dog?

HeartGard Plus is indicated for puppies and dogs 6 weeks of age and older. There is no minimum weight requirement for its use.

I forgot to give my dog HeartGard Plus. What should I do?

When you miss giving a dose, immediately administer one chew and continue with the monthly schedule.

Should I continue giving my dog HeartGard Plus during winter?

The risk of heartworm disease may be reduced during winter, but it is never out of the equation. Stopping the prevention during winter can leave gaps in protection, making your dog susceptible to the heartworm infection. Therefore, it is recommended to administer heartworm preventive year-round, including winter.
