What is Nexgard?

NexGard Chew for Dogs is a palatable beef-flavored chew, formulated to protect dogs against a range of external parasites. This monthly treatment is suitable for puppies and dogs from 8 weeks of age, weighing at least 4 lbs. The chew formula kills adult fleas and treats and prevents flea infestations. NexGard Chew for Dogs also treats and controls tick infestations caused by black-legged ticks, American dog ticks, lone star ticks, brown dog ticks and longhorned ticks. The treatment is also indicated for the prevention of Lyme disease infections due to killing black-legged ticks.

How does it work?

NexGard flea treatment for dogs features afoxolaner as its active ingredient. It is a member of the isoxazoline family, shown to inhibit insect and acarine ligand-gated chloride channels and block pre- and post-synaptic transfer of chloride ions across cell membranes. This afoxolaner-induced hyperexcitation causes uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system of the parasites and death of insects and acarine.

NexGard safe for dogs?

NexGard is safe for use in puppies and dogs from 8 weeks of age and 4 lbs of body weight. It should be used with caution in dogs with a history of seizures and other neurologic disorders. Also, the safe use of NexGard has not been evaluated in pregnant, breeding and lactating dogs. You should seek your vet’s consent before using it on your pet.

Can I use NexGard for Dogs on cats or other animals?

NexGard chews should only be used to treat dogs. It shouldn’t be used on any other animals. If you wish to protect your cat against parasites, you may consider using NexGard Combo.

Yes, NexGard chews can be used together with vaccines, anthelmintics, antibiotics, steroids, NSAIDs and antihistamines.
