NexGard Chews: Flea & Tick Treatment for Dogs

NexGard for Dogs is a beef-flavored chewable treatment that provides an easy way to protect your canine companions from common external parasites. These soft, tasty chews are readily accepted by most dogs, making them ideal for those with sensitive skin or for dogs that do not like topical treatments. When administered as indicated, this monthly parasite treatment for dogs is effective against:

Fleas

  • Kills fleas before they can lay eggs.
  • Helps treat & prevent flea infestations.
  • Helps reduce the signs of flea allergy dermatitis after treatment.

Ticks

  • Indicated for the treatment & control of tick infestations of black-legged tick, American dog tick, lone star tick, brown dog tick and longhorned tick.

  • Indicated for the prevention of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) infections as a direct result of killing black-legged vector ticks.

  • Weigh your dog and select the dosage pack that closely matches the dog's weight.
  • Administer NexGard orally, once per month.
  • You may begin treating your dog with NexGard at any time of the year. For uninterrupted protection, continue the use throughout the year.
  • It can be given with or without food. When giving with feed, watch your dog closely and ensure the complete chew is taken. If you suspect that any of the dose has been lost or if the dog vomits the dosage within two hours, give another full dose.
  • If you miss a dose, give one chew immediately and resume the monthly dosing schedule.
  • Treat all the pets in the household for overall flea control.

You should keep these chews out of the reach of children, pets and uninformed people. In case of accidental ingestion, consult a physician immediately. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling this treatment. Field studies referenced in the label suggest that NexGard Chews can be used with veterinary treatments, such as antibiotics, vaccines, steroids, anthelmintics, antihistamines, NSAIDs and anesthetics.

Precautions

The safety of these chews has not been evaluated in pregnant, breeding or lactating dogs. This treatment (afoxolaner) belongs to isoxazoline class. You should use these chews with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders. Consult your veterinarian before use.

Contraindications

NexGard flea & tick treatment is not indicated for humans. Do not use this treatment in puppies under 8 weeks of age or weighing less than 4 lbs.

Storage Instructions

Store at or below 30°C (86°F) with excursions permitted up to 40°C (104°F).

What is NexGard?

How does NexGard flea & tick treatment work?

This monthly treatment contains afoxolaner as the active ingredient. After administration, it is quickly absorbed into the dog's bloodstream. Afoxolaner targets the nervous system of parasites, causing uncontrolled neuromuscular activity, leading to paralysis and death of fleas and ticks.

How is NexGard different from NexGard Spectra?

NexGard Spectra contains afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime as its active ingredients. It protects dogs from external and internal parasites, including fleas, ticks, heartworms, intestinal worms, mites and mange. NexGard contains afoxolaner and it protects dogs from fleas and multiple tick species. It is also indicated for the prevention of Lyme disease infections as a direct result of killing the black-legged vector ticks.

How fast does NexGard Chew work?

A lab study referenced in the label suggests that NexGard Chews begin killing fleas four hours after ingestion and demonstrate nearly complete efficacy at eight hours. According to another lab study, this oral treatment provides more than 90% efficacy against multiple tick species at 72 hours after tick infestations.

Which ticks is NexGard effective against?

This flea and tick treatment protects dogs from black-legged ticks, American dog ticks, brown dog ticks, lone star ticks and longhorned ticks.

How frequently should I use this treatment on my dog?

NexGard should be administered once every month throughout the year.

Can I bathe my dog after administering NexGard?

NexGard for dogs is an oral chewable flea and tick treatment. It works systemically and bathing or shampooing the dog after treatment shall not reduce its efficacy.

What if my dog vomits after administering NexGard oral treatment?

If the vomiting occurs within two hours of administration, give another full dose. If the dog vomits after two or more hours, talk to a vet before giving another dose.

Can I give NexGard and Frontline Plus together to my dog?

NexGard Chews and Frontline Plus are safe for dogs when used as directed individually. Before using a combination of these treatments, it is recommended that you talk to a veterinarian.
