Recently Chicago was in news for a major outbreak of Canine Flu that affected more than thousands of pups followed by Atlanta, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, California, New York and Massachusetts that also tested positive. Canine Influenza or Dog flu that is majorly caused by two viruses – H3N8 and H3N2 has gone rampant because it often goes undetectable. Reason being, the symptoms like lethargy, sneezing or coughing are misinterpreted as normal which gives the virus a chance to constantly spread its reach in the furry population. This unawareness has increased the risk of contractions of the flu in more pets than usual and thus necessitates people to have the proper knowledge to keep their pets safe if the flu affects their canine.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says that the flu spreads via air particles and is highly contagious; therefore, all dogs must be given flu shots and vaccinations beforehand to control flu cases in the country. Veterinarians in the association also suggest that pet-frequented areas like dog parks or dog daycares and salons must be avoided.

So, here are some tips you can follow to protect your canine from the flu epidemic.

Vaccinate Your Dog

Vaccination is important in preventing your dog from contracting flu. A bivalent vaccine for canines offers protection from both the viruses H3N8 and H3N2 and is thus highly recommended for safeguarding pets against the flu.

Avoid Contact With Other Dogs

Canine Influenza is easily transmitted through touch and thus one pet can affect other pets in the house or its vicinity if not kept apart. Just a sneeze or a sniff of the nose is enough to transfer the virus. So, make sure you keep the infected pet separate from others and avoid your dog from coming in contact with the other infected pets.

Disinfect Your House

If you have visitors at home with their infected pet, you must disinfect all the places that could have possibly been touched by him. Infected surfaces can also transmit the virus to you pooch then be it furniture, clothes or anything. Make sure you wash your clothes with warm water if you have come in contact with the infected pet and use a potent disinfectant to clean surfaces.

Wash Your Hands After Cleaning Kennels, Cages or Infected Dog

A pet’s living area can contain a virus which can transfer onto your hands and clothes while cleaning which in turn may infect other pets if you hold them. So, always wash your hands after cleaning areas where infected pet resides. Better if you use gloves while cleaning and handling an infected pet.

Visit The Vet If You See Signs

As we have already learned the symptoms could be deceptive, when you see your pup sneezing or coughing a lot and seems lethargic, better get him checked by the vet. Meanwhile, keep other dogs in the house away from his vicinity.
