Another paper revealed that feral cats got 52% of their calories from protein and 46% from fat, which only leaves 2% available to come from carbohydrates.<\/span><\/p>\n

The foundation of a healthy cat diet is a flesh-based protein like meat, fish or poultry. Dry food should be high in animal proteins, and low in plant proteins. Carbohydrates should make up no more than ten percent of the mix of the cat food ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n

How much should you feed your cat?<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

A healthy, active 8-pound adult cat requires about 30 calories per pound per day. This figure was given by Animal Medical Center in New York. About 240 calories per day is required by the average 8-pound cat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Typically, the dry food contains about 300 calories per cup, and canned food contains about 250 calories in each 6 oz can. (or 125 calories per 3-ounce can). Using these counts as a guide, an 8-pound cat would need 4\/5 cups of dry food or just less than a full 6-oz can (or two 3-ounce cans) of wet food per day. As per your cat\u2019s preference of eating dry or wet food you can adjust the proportions.<\/span><\/p>\n

To accommodate changing metabolism and dietary needs you will need to modify your cat\u2019s diet throughout her life. Feel your cat\u2019s backbone and ribs. If the ribs and backbone show through her skin, she is too thin. If you can\u2019t feel the ribs, your cat may likely be overweight. Adjust her portions accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n
